The most frequently performed female genital aesthetic operation globally is labiaplasty for labia minora, followed by vaginal tightening (vaginoplasty). In addition, fractional vaginal laser, genital radiofrequency, and genital PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) applications have also gained importance. In recent years, an incredible trend has been followed by patients towards female genital aesthetic operations.
Genital aesthetic operations are included neither in medical education nor in residency programs, getting hands on training in aesthetic gynecology is so important before practicing. Otherwise, irreversible results may occur in operations performed by surgeons who do not have sufficient training or expertise!
Female genital aesthetic surgeries include surgical operations related to the anatomical regions located in the internal and external genitalia.
Anatomy of female external genitalia (vulva)
Labiaplasty is a genital lip reduction operation. It is also known as “labioplasty”, “labia minora reduction” or “labiaminoraplasty”.
It is also referred to as "Nymphoplasty" (Nymphoplastie),especially in French-speaking countries. Nympha is synonymous with "labium minus" (small genital lip) and means "bride in a veil, young girl" in ancient Greek. Its plural form is “labia minora” and it is “Nymphae”.
It is the removal of excess skin tissue over the clitoris and the reduction of the head covering the clitoris. It is usually done simultaneously with labiaplasty. 'Hood' is an English word and means cap or bonnet.
It is also known as “clitoral hoodoplasty”, “clitorohoodoplasty” or “clitoral hoodectomy”.
The enlargement and relaxation of the vagina and the decrease in pleasure during sexual intercourse are known as “vaginal relaxation”. In some cases, bladder and rectum prolapse may accompany vaginal enlargement.
Vaginoplasty is the surgical narrowing and tightening of the vagina that is enlarged and abundant for different reasons and the narrowing of the vagina by surgery.
Vaginoplasty is also known as "Colporrhaphy surgery" or “surgical vaginal rejuvenation”, which gynecologists frequently perform. Fascia and muscle repair are performed by removing the vaginal mucosa.
Vaginoplasty surgeries can be performed in several different ways.
Posterior colporrhaphy: It is a vaginal narrowing surgery performed by making an incision on the back wall of the vagina, and sometimes the vaginal muscles that are separated from each other are approximated.
Anterior colporrhaphy: It is a vaginoplasty surgery performed by making an incision on the anterior wall of the vagina. If there is a bladder prolapse, this is also corrected.
Lateral colporrhaphy: It is a vaginoplasty surgery performed by making an incision on the lateral walls of the vagina.
It is also known as “Perineoraphy” or “Perineal aesthetics”. In this genital aesthetic operation, the entrance of the vagina and perineal tissue are repaired. In the meantime, episiotomy scars and skin folds in the area are also removed. As a result of perineoplasty, the perineal area is slightly elevated, and the “perineal length” is increased.
It is the concomitant narrowing of the vagina from the back (posterior colporrhaphy) and perineoplasty operations.
It is an aesthetic operation in which the broken hymen is repaired. The aim is to regain virginity. It is also called "hymenorrhaphy", "revirgination", or "hymen repair".
On the other hand, “hymen protrusion (prolapse)”, which manifests itself from the outside, can be aesthetically disturbing. In addition, in cases such as vestibulitis and "painful hymen", the hymen tissue can cause pain during sexual intercourse. In all these cases, a hymenectomy (removal of the hymen) operation can also be performed.
It is the enlargement of collapsed large (external) lips, usually by injecting adipose tissue harvested from the person herself. Augmentation can also be done with Hyaluronic acid (HA) injection.
It is the surgical stretching and reduction of the saggy labia majora (bigger lips).
